Aggressive Advocacy For Paternity Legal Concerns
If a child is born during the marriage, the husband is assumed to be the child’s father. However, the issue of paternity becomes complicated if the couple is not married or when the spouses decide to divorce. Paternity can be a sensitive topic with serious implications on your rights as a parent. If you find yourself in a paternity dispute, you need a compassionate, experienced lawyer by your side. Lana Panagoulia Law, PLLC, can help you resolve your paternity issues.
Whether you want to establish or disprove the parentage of your child, our firm assists both mothers and fathers with their legal matters throughout Michigan. To discuss paternity matters with an experienced lawyer, contact our Ann Arbor law firm at 734-769-LANA.
How To Establish Paternity In Michigan
In Michigan, paternity is established in two different ways. If the couple is unmarried at the time of conception or birth, both parents can sign a Michigan Affidavit of Parentage. Once the affidavit is completed and signed, it must be filed with the state registrar office of the Michigan Department of Community Health.
Paternity may also be established through a court order, after conducting a DNA test to determine the biological father.
Whether both parents sign an affidavit or a father takes a DNA paternity test, a court order is necessary to establish parental rights. Without a court order, a biological father has no legal right to custody or visitation. Without a court order, the father is not obligated to pay child support. Both parents have legal rights that hinge on paternity. Our firm can help mothers and fathers establish paternity so that they may best support their children’s needs.
